Swingtones

Strafford, New Hampshire

Swingtones is an interactive visual and acoustic art installation built by 88 children at the Beam summer camp. The campers built unique wooden swings and interconnected sculptural chimes hanging from the tree canopy. These chimes bob up and down to create patterns of sound to the combined rhythms of all the swings’ movements. A wire pulley network translates the lateral movement of each swing to create the right amount of vertical movement for multiple chimes. Supermass Studio closely collaborated with the children and their camp counselors through the fabrication and installation of the project.
