Mulberry Commons Park is a transformational 3-acre public open space in the heart of downtown Newark. It represents a critical first step in the realization of a long-held vision by city officials to create a new center of gravity for downtown: one that offers a safe, family-friendly, pedestrian-oriented environment and a new hub for activities.

Supermass Studio investigated ways to provide broad appeal to both existing residents and newcomers and the functionality to accommodate new circulation patterns with large volumes of people moving through. The overall park space is envisioned as a sequence of “rooms” that offer a range of experiences and diverse programming opportunities for activation. Two main features of the park are the interactive fountain at the event plaza and a unique playscape that is integrated with the overall grading scheme of the park.
