LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Concourse Parks
New York, New York
The new LaGuardia Central Terminal B is a 1.3 million-square-foot, 35-gate terminal that featured dual pedestrian bridges spanning active aircraft taxi lanes — a first in the world — connecting the main part of the terminal to two island concourses. Passengers walked above aircraft as they made their way to their gates, enjoying views of the iconic Manhattan skyline, and first encountered the central park located at the central node as they arrived at each concourse.
Supermass Studio’s design for the Concourse Park drew its inspiration from the most quintessential New York City landscape, Central Park. Custom-designed precast GFRC planters with integrated seating were created using the latest digital fabrication techniques and reminded travelers of the famous 450-million-year-old schist rock formation Umpire Rock in Central Park.
