LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Concourse Parks

New York, New York

The New Terminal B at LaGuardia Airport is a long-anticipated reinvention of a classic New York City icon that evokes the vibrancy, individuality, and cultural diversity of New York City. The design of the new terminal landscape called for a genuine sense of place, a New-Yorkness, that is people-centered and promotes pedestrian activities.

The project takes inspiration from the pocket parks of New York City that thread together open spaces and unite neighborhoods. One of the defining elements includes a series of organically shaped modular precast glass fiber reinforced concrete planters. The sinuous forms promote fluid and intuitive movement, while the built-in seating and movable chairs and tables recall the socially engaging park furnishings found in many New York City parks. The concourse park at LaGuardia Airport sets a new standard for airport amenity landscapes and illustrates an approach in creating moments of genuine and intimate park experiences for people within large and impersonal infrastructural environments.
