Kingston Point Climate Adaptive Design

Kingston, New York

Kingston Point is a historic riverfront public recreational park and preserved natural lands along the Hudson River and has been a cherished natural public asset. In partnership with the City of Kingston, Supermass Studio was commissioned by NYSDEC to develop a climate adaptive framework plan for Kingston Point, as well as a preliminary design for a pilot project site. Supermass Studio’s approach considers the need to examine Kingston Point as a site demonstrating complex interplay of a shifting and changing estuarine ecosystem due to sea level rise and the city’s need to provide accessible recreational lands while protecting its valuable natural resources. Following an evaluation of scenarios and public feedback, the public beach was selected as the pilot project site. The design incorporates a terraced beach reinforcement system with an integrated tidal wetland habitat zone and living shorelines.
