Newark Community Museum of Social Justice

Newark, New Jersey

Supermass Studio developed the landscape design for the Newark Community Museum of Social Justice, reimagining the historic 1st Police Precinct as a welcoming civic space dedicated to memory, healing, and community dialogue. Guided by the museum’s mission to honor the lives and events surrounding the 1967 Newark Rebellion, the design organizes the site into a series of dignified outdoor rooms—including a memorial plaza, accessible pedestrian entry, and shaded terrace garden—that support gathering, reflection, and storytelling.

The landscape integrates permeable paving, flexible seating, open-air learning areas, and a new granite memorial wall to create an inclusive public realm that invites visitors to engage with Newark’s history of activism while supporting community use.
